On This page we will briefly explore the History of adult breastfeeding over a range of cultures. Many cultures left no written records but some did and some have paintings to remind us of what happened. Some of these were reminders of single events rather than national trends but the fact that they were made and preserved shows how important the subject is in people's minds.

In recent news, a Swiss Chef has begun making dishes in his restaurant with his wife's breastmilk. Authorities are trying to stop him but there is no law against it. They have tried to find a health restriction saying that the milk has not been tested by the food bureau!
But its ok for mothers to feed their children!!!??

A man in France has been making cheese from breastmilk for years and it is still available. http://www.whytraveltofrance.com/2007/06/09/human-breast-milk-cheese-made-in-france/

Going back a hundred years, a man in Germany, Carl Buttenstedt, wrote a book called (translation) Marriage of happiness. It was a how to book describing how to induce lactation and some Doctors began prescibing it to couples who had lacklustre marriages and to women with difficult periods or who were chronically weak. It sold quietly for a lot of money for the time. Women who could afford Doctors back then were likely to opt for a wetnurse rather than breastfeed their own children. Perhaps that was the start of their trouble.

One of the connections we have with the past is the more recent information we have from primitive tribal life in places like the Amazon basin where indians have been living as they did hundreds of years ago until recent times. Of course in any primitive lifestyle where it is very hot every day, wearing anything to cover the breasts is unlikely, leaving them available at any time. We know that indian women in the Amazon region breastfeed their children and other women's children at anytime and for as long as the children like. That is there is no age limit. We also know that they often breastfeed family pets such as dogs. What will stop them breastfeeding their men?

Another recent news article purported that a woman in New Zealand was breast feeding her dog and she claimed that it would make him more protective of her and her child. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=3611466

In Papua New Guinea, native women commonly breast feed piglets.
In societies where breastfeeding is natural, there is little conditioning to tell people they are wrong. They just do what is practical.

A woman in JAPAN recently made news by breastfeeding her kitten. Hello kitty! It seems that many women around the world just want to use their equipment to nurture almost anything when the baby is not around.

This may be an extreme example but when you compare feeding an animal to feeding from an animal, (cows) one must ask what is wrong with feeding each other?
Japanese men have long been interested in adult nursing and have developed a subculture almost. There is a site called the Holstien club which features photos of lactating breasts mostly taken in Japan.

China has a long History of filial piety, that is the custom of reverencing, looking after one's elders. Westerners are raised to think that independence is the goal of life but Easterners are raised to be interdependent and looking after ones elders is natural. The people who included breastfeeding in this were immortalized on canvas and in stone. The practice was to feed mothers milk to the very elderly as their stomachs were unable to digest much else. It is the custom for women to live with their husbands parents so she would be breastfeeding her grand father in law.

These statues are a modern tourist attraction at Haw pah Villa.

2009 Mrs Luo in Chong qing was feeding her whole family as she was making too much milk and didn't want to waste it. 3 adults and one child.

Pope Innocent viii could be thought of as indulgent but when his health began to fail he turned to breast milk for its easy digestion and immunological properties.

This painting by Reubens depicts a story about a Roman man who was sentenced to death by starvation. He was allowed family visitors though so his daughter began to visit him regularly. After a while the guards noticed that he wasn't deteriorating and spied on them. They saw his daughter breastfeeding him. The officials were so amazed by her total love and devotion for him that they released him.

The painting is called Roman Charity and was such a popular theme that many of the great painters of the Renaissance did it.

Many painters were fascinated by this subject.

A similar story of love and redemption is being outworked even today and a daughter seeks to keep her father alive with her breastmilk: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/OnCall/story?id=7682702&page=1

Lets go back to the beginning and have a look at Adam and Eve in the garden. They were naked but not ashamed of their bodies and in the unique position of being able to explore and experience life without preconception or public opinion. The bible tells us that Eve was made especially for Adam, (including her breasts) in other words, they were a perfect match.I imagine they enjoyed exploring each other daily but the bible tells us that they didn't conceive until after they were kicked out of Eden. What were they doing all that time?
Whatever they liked! They were innocent and not ashamed.
This picture is an excerpt from Michaelangelo's temptation in the garden. Here Eve is turning from the fruit she was not forbidden, to take that which God said not to eat.

Moving ahead in time we find the children of Israel being told they were going to a land overflowing with milk and honey. Interesting that breast milk tastes like milk with honey in it.
The prophet Isaiah told his audience that they would suck and be satisfied by (Jerusalem's) consoling breasts, overflowing abundantly (Hebrew imp. Squirting ).
Solomon warned his son to be careful to get his needs met at home and to be satisfied by his wife's breasts at all times. He described them as being like fruit or a bunch of grapes, filled with juice and delicious.

And now we come to modern western lifestyles and find that things haven't changed that much. Man still finds a woman's feminine attributes fascinating and women for the most part don't mind showing them off.

And some go even further and don't mind producing the milk they need as well.

Mae West, the pin up girl of the 40s had an inflatable life vest named after her.
She is quoted as saying, "Too much of a good thing... is even better!"
Back then, men had no qualms about saying what they liked and women appreciated it.

Women have freedom of choice these days and many choose to keep themselves to themselves but if you want to please your man and please yourself at the same time, reducing menstrual/menopausal trouble and having a nice intimate time, you might consider breastfeeding your man as an option.
There are few better ways to improve intimacy in a relationship and reduce the risk of cancer at the same time and the medicine is free.
For centuries in every culture woman have wanted to express their love through their God given ability to nurture those they love through their beautiful breasts and most men are happy to help.
